1. Genius Luci type system
Limestone, 30x55cm, hand carved

A digital - hand carved in stone - variable font designed and developed as part of my final BA project at Central Saint Martins.

This project addresses the question:How can traditional stone letter-carving inform timeless communication and modern digital typeface design?

By exploring the relationship between traditional letter carving and contemporary technology, the project delves into the intersection of architecture and graphic design, as well as heritage conservation and durability. It examines the stagnation in the cultural development of stone letter-carving from the 20th century to the present.

With this typeface, I re-contextualise this craft and reconnect the past of this material with our future.

This monospace, once carved in stone, display an even amount of shadow in its form relative to the position of a light source. The variable digital version captures the dynamic motion of shadows within the incised letters. This modular typeface offers extensive variation based on the light’s direction—North, South, East, West, and all angles in between.
